Cycling round the ironworks

Ironworks tour

The Strömfors refinery is at the heart of this cycling route, as two old refinery areas, Stockfors and Strömfors, are located on the lower reaches of the Kymijoki River, just 10 kilometres apart. This cycling route invites you on a journey through the history of the cane areas, offering a variety of experiences and delicious tastes.

Stockfors potting area:

Like many other historic manor houses, Stockfors was a family estate for a long time, changing hands several times. The manor was established in 1570 and operated as a farm until 1889. At that time, the Norwegian engineer Olaf Bülow and Consul Ole Nedrum bought the manor after becoming interested in hydroelectric power on the Kymijoki River. "The 'Pyhtää branch' looked the most promising, offering plenty of raw materials from the forests in the area, as well as hydroelectric power. In 1901, a sawmill and power station was built in Klåsaro, operating until the 1980s. Today, the area offers a wide range of cultural and welfare services, with the Patroon House at the centre.

The Strömfors Ironworks area:

Strömfors Ironworks is one of the oldest ironworks in Finland, with roots dating back to the 17th century. For more than 250 years, the waters of the westernmost branch of the Kymijoki River kept the water wheels of the foundry turning, keeping the water hammer moving and the blacksmiths busy. The history of the foundry is strongly linked to the iron industry of the Swedish Empire, and it was founded in 1695. Strömfors Ironworks has always been a multi-functional enterprise, with activities including an ironworks, sawmill, mill, brewery, croft and brickworks. Today, the history of the area lives on through its charming timber landscape, museums and craftsmen.

Come with your own bike or rent one from either Aeronautica Arena or Wellsters in Strömfors and go on a fascinating whip tour. Along the way, you can also explore other interesting destinations, such as the Aeronautica Arena's wide range of activities and the medieval stone church of St. Henrik in Pyhtää. The Klåsarö power station dam offers a spectacular view, and along the way you can admire the Savukoski Museum Bridge and the hand-operated Struka lock.

This route not only invites cyclists, but also offers a historical journey and an adventure in the beautiful Kymijoki Valley.
