Kankivasara Museum
The history of Strömfors began with a hammer mill. Welcome to experience one of Finland's first industrial heritage museums, established in the 1950s! Here, time has stood still in the era of hydroelectric power.
The Kankivasaramuseum is located in the Alapaja building in Strömfors Ruuk. The current Alapaja was not completed in its present form until the 1890s, when, after numerous fires, the forge was finally built in brick. Somewhere underneath the present-day barn are still the remains of the original 17th century forge, making the whole building a fixed monument protected by the Heritage Act!
In the hammer mill, a weak raw iron, coat iron, was further processed into durable hammer iron. For Strömfors, the wrought iron was imported all the way from Sweden! In the current museum you can see a real hammer hammer and the waterwheel that powered it. The museum also has a collection of artefacts, photographs and paintings from the iron industry. The museum was established by the A. Ahlström company the same year that iron mining was stopped at the ironworks, to commemorate the village's important cultural history.
The Kankivasaramuseum is maintained by the City of Loviisa. The museum is open according to the opening hours of the Yläpaja Museum. Please check them on the website of the High Altar Museum!
