Strömfors Ironworks services
Strömfors Ironworks is an ironworks community, a village and a destination where history meets today. Here in Strömfors we still have Finland's valuable industrial heritage and history thriving. Experience Finland's vibrant nature and diverse cultural life.
The Strömfors iron foundry was licensed to operate in the 1690s, but even before that, a grist mill had already been operating on its rapids. The founding of the iron foundry marked the beginning of an industrial era that lasted until the 2010s. Our history is closely interwoven with the development of the Finnish industrial community and the rich cultural heritage of our country. Our ironworks is the easternmost coastal ironworks in Finland and the last hydroelectric iron refinery in Finland. We are part of the Finnish Industrial Heritage Route and the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) of the Council of Europe!
We are a year-round destination. In the streets of Ruuk you will find various boutiques, art exhibitions and museums. We offer services for both mental and physical well-being. Our region has a long history and we will tell you about it through guided tours. In Ruukis, you can see and, if you wish, experience blacksmithing in the old Upper Workshop, where master blacksmith Tiia-Riitta Lahti continues the tradition of ironworking. In the summer, the master blacksmith holds traditional ironworking demonstrations, where you can experience the banging of the only genuine hydro-powered nipple hammer in Finland.
Strömfors Ironworks is not just a day trip destination. Stay with us and stay overnight on your visit to the ruin. Choose from experiential accommodation by the river, a guesthouse, a hotel steeped in history or a wilderness accommodation.
Welcome to visit us at Strömfors Ironworks, where the past lives on and stories are born again and again!
